With more efficient and sustainable water management in Flanders as its primary goal, waste water treatment company Aquafin launches a digitization project, with the support of ICT consulting company delaware. The aim is to enable a stronger way of collaborating between all actors in the water industry and allow for mutually beneficial and solid data exchange. The current software will be replaced with, among others, a new ERP solution, SAP S/4HANA Cloud.

“Aquafin’s digital ambition materializes in societal added-value, in several domains. Standardized business processes are the foundation for a future-proof and cost-efficient digital architecture,”  explains Ronny Goossens, Aquafin’s Head of Digital. “We thoroughly went about selecting a partner for the implementation of a new ERP system. delaware’s track record in the utilities industry and its phased approach is what made us decide to join forces with them.”

Phased and hybrid

Jan Van der Steen, partner and industry lead utilities at delaware, emphasizes that a phased approach indeed is the way to go according to delaware: “We implement new functionalities incrementally, to ensure business continuity is guaranteed. Our expertise in digital transformation projects within the utilities industry is essential to the success of this project. Through the use of a proven roadmap, we already supported several utility companies in their digital transformation initiatives.”

“Apart from replacing the current AS400 system with SAP, we will also create the openness required to build the correct accompanying technology. That way, we support Aquafin in their growth towards a smart, data-driven waste water treatment company. “

Implementing the right technology is one thing. However, the significance of the human factor in the success of this trajectory is tremendous: “For technology to perform, buy-in of all stakeholders involved is pivotal, hence our focus on change management. Installing a smart water treatment process does not only need extensive digitization, but also a new way of working,” continues Erwin Blommaert, partner at delaware. “A real partnership between Aquafin and our implementation partner delaware is the goal,” concludes Ronny Goossens. “That’s the only way we can make progress and keep our digital roadmap on track.”
