Headaches are a very common symptom; almost everyone suffers from it occasionally. It comes in all different ‘shapes and sizes’. Mild, nagging, intense, pounding, splitting, with stabs of pain and flashes of light… it’s all possible.
For some, the headache is so intense they consult a doctor. The properties, symptoms, causes and duration of headaches vary per type of headache, all of which require a unique treatment. That makes it difficult for doctors to diagnose patients and come up with a proper treatment plan.
Richard Posthuma, cluster headache patient, encountered this with his own diagnosis and came up with a method that uses data collection to help recognise and analyse patterns. Information that makes it easier for a doctor to reach a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Tech is the answer
Once the foundation for the solution had been laid, Richard took his idea to his employer - SAP - who worked with delaware to make his idea a reality. The Headache App was born.
The goal of the Headache App is to be able to give headache patients a faster diagnosis and recognise patterns in order to actively respond to those patterns.
Cluster headaches are a serious form of headache that causes periods of intense pain around and behind one eye.
This is a chronic headache without a recognisable pattern in which painkillers are used regularly.
Migraine means attacks of severe, intense, pounding and throbbing headache, usually on one side of the head.
Tension headaches are a common dull, pressing pain on both sides of the head and neck.
How does it work?
With the Headache App, you can quickly and easily register your headaches and build up a personal headache diary, without having to record too much yourself. The App supports various types of headache and combinations of those. If you do not yet have any idea what kind of headache you suffer from, you can select ‘Unknown’ and still use the advantages of the App.
Depending on your personal diagnosis, you will receive custom screens to record your headaches, which will prevent you from having to answer and record unnecessary questions. The App also automatically registers the time and date. You can also easily enter any medicine you use, both medication you use preventively and medication you use when a headache comes on.
The App generates a graph (headache diary) showing your pattern and the intensity of your headaches. You can share this with your doctor via e-mail.
The diary helps the doctor to recognise patterns more quickly and provides them with better insight into your headaches. This will enable them to accurately diagnose you more quickly, enabling an effective treatment to start sooner. The App was developed in collaboration with the VNHC (Netherlands Association of Headache Centres), which includes over 40 Dutch hospitals with a specific Headache Centre.
“Digital Society School is a place for experiment and training where business, education and the academic world work together on a local challenge related to a sustainable development goal from the UN. Together with the professionals of delaware, in close collaboration with the VNHC and SAP, we worked hard on a a concrete challenge and solution for handling cluster headache. The result, next to an interesting design for the scalable prototype, is a combination of joined learning results and methods that can accelerate transformation and change within an organization.” – Wouter Meys, Digital Society School
